i have a gateway modem. on the back it has the ehternet, which is what i use currently and it has the usb, i'm assuming for computers that don't have the ethernet card. can i run the ethernet to 1 computer and the usb out to another and run internet on both? it's also wireless, so that would be 3 computers off the same modem. i usually use 1 comp. for burning vids/converting music and movies and other video projects, it's basically empty other than editing and burning software. the other is the internet surfer/downloader. i have a 3rd that's wireless in the back room for the GF. it would be nice to download directly to the computer that i use for all the editing/burning instead of moving everything back and forth all the time.

get a router.
it has a wireless router built in. i would just have to buy another wireless card for the 3rd computer. download speeds are considerably slower on the wireless computer i have currently though. do wireless speeds differ depending on the card i buy?

You are not going to be able to use both at once... it is either one or the other.
As for download speed difference, what kind of differences are you seeing?
i use azureus and it's common to see +300 kb/s. with the wireless computer i rarely see over 100 kb/s. i hooked the ethernet up to the wireless computer just to see if it was lack of ram or processor speed. it wasn't. it was downloading at over 300kb/s as well. being wireless seriously slows it down. i did do port forwarding, which helped alot running through ethernet, but did nothing wirelessly.

well that many be because of many factor. You might me using a .11b router. There might be many walls between the router and computer. You wifi card just might ****. I am using a wire connection on this computer, the router is in the basement and I am on the top floor, even then I get over 1mb/sec download speeds off of utorrent.

i'm probably just thinking wishfully. i do get close to 1 mb/s or 100 kb/s wirelessly. i didn't realize how much slower wireless was.
