So I just got back to my dorm for this semester. Back in November I built a PC consisting of:

Case: Antec 300

MB: ASUS M3N78 Pro

CPU: Phenom 9850 (overclocked currently)

Ram: GSkill PC8500 4GB

Coolers: 5 fans plus Xigmatek Rifle CPU cooler

HDD: Seagate 500GB SATA

OS: Vista Premium Home 64bit

Well I just turned on my PC and the keyboard didn't work. So I replaced the batteries, still nothing. Mouse works fine. That was a Logitech wireless keyboard, never had problems until now. So i just bought a new one from WalMart to see what happens.

Microsoft Curve 2000. Brand new. Same thing. It's not recognizing there's a keyboard or something. I can't type my password to sign in. It does however randomly work during loading of Windows such that I went into BIOS and could do whatever. Worked fine. Nope...couldn't type my password. Even the OnScreen Keyboard wouldn't show it, just froze but I could still restart, shutdown, sleep but nothing else.

So I just got in using Safe Mode (and OnScreen keyboard) and the keyboard works...??????

What the hell is going on? Im lucky I have a laptop too though. This PC hasn't been used since around Dec 12th when I left for home for break.

USB or PS/2?

the microsoft is USB so I tried 3 different ports under normal startup, nothing.

Then I tried the USB to PS/2 with it and same thing. The logitech uses USB to PS/2. Worked fine until now. I can use the keyboard under Safe Mode but not normal startup.

Have you tried rolling back your system (providing it is enabled)?

no but im scanning for any potential spyware/virus that could be lurking but i havent used the **** thing in a month..

I would also check and make sure there is not any type of conflict with your USB stuff going on in computer managerment, maybe try booting it up with only a keyboard/mouse plugged in?

hmm well its working under normal start up now...???? my AVG license expired over the break and it was the first thing to show up when I got into Safe Mode....so I removed it and am getting another..

could that have caused it? I've never had a dumb thing like this happen. As long as it's working I don't care but still just curious now as to what it could have been..
