Component sets, Mids with "cones" and minds without "cones"

I see alotof component sets, some have a "cone" sticking out of them. Some lookf like 6.5" subwoofers. What exactly is the difference, if any? Are the ones without cones more bass oriented? I found a nice set a Focals I want to get, and they have that familliar cone that my eclipses have. And my eclipse comp set has no midbass whatsoever. Cany anyone clarify this?

if you took two identical drivers one with the phase plug (hole in cone) vs one with a dustcap.. (no hole in cone) i think the one without the hole will move more air and be deeper but won't be move as fast and have slightly less clarity on the upper mid range...

i might be wrong on that tho

They both have "holes" in the cone, go remove a dustcap off a speaker and tell me what you see...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Phase plugs help with upper end dispersion/off axis response. In the full range community where people run 6.5's and 8's up to 12 or 14KHz or higher people swear by replacing whizzer cones with wooden phase plugs because they make the upper midrange and treble tolerable. Even in a car audio environment where you're crossing over much lower they'll still help. They do squat for midbass response.
