james i dare you to name a better tweeter than the drt26 for 100 bucks.. while some of the mids are less than impressive in the midrange(its actually the xover networks) they offer substantial midbass, depth and soundstange as well as low frequency extension..
i have the ES6 and drt26 and for the money i paid i have yet to hear a set that compares.. the new Hd set is in your price ranger and the new mids and tweeters are better there basically as nice as the ES sets..
i like the pioneer and the alpine sets ill admit there mids are very nice, but where the cdt sets stand out is the excellent on axis response and the excellent soundstaging and lowend.. i know alot of people that still rather have the midrange of say dynaudio or morel but you simply won't get the same low end and depth..
so if you want my suggestion? Ill tell you what i did and i loved it.. grab a 4 channel amp with good xover and get the mids/tweeters stand alone.. sure its a bit more expensive but the tuning and tweaking you cna do is far more extensive and ultimatly it sounds better and gets louder..
for example the SS ref 920.4 and the CDT es06 mids and the ES 01 tweeter would put you right @ 1k but if you install them correctly people will swear you have a multi K setup.. when it comes to front stage you should spend at least 2x as much tweeking tuning and on a good set of speakers than your substage..
