complete system

im currently restoreing my 86 monte carlo's interior and am looking to redo the entire sound system from a to z. car audio isnt exactly my strong point but would like to do the work myself. i need help deciding on which products to buy to do an entire system. things i know i need are; 2 dash speakers, 2 door speakers, 2 additionally speakers for my package tray, 2 12" subs, cd changer, and a head unit that is dvd compatible. what other components do i need to build a great sounding system? any feedback is greatly appreciated.

86 monte is a nice body to work with. if i were you i'd elimate the dash speakers and go with some speakers either in the kick panels or the doors. if you really want it loud and sounding great i'd recommend a set of ID horns and some mids in the doors. as for subs i'd IB and use the trunk as the enclosure. if i remember right that car has the lil hump in the trunk going under the rear deck. and aren't the rear speakers 4x10s? if so i'd just illimnate them completely too.

^What's IB? I'm working on my Cutlass which is almost the same as the Monte.

IB/TB infinate baffle or trunk baffle back in the days i was called free air. the trick to this is to seal off the trunk completely from the front of the car and mount the subs firing into the cabin wether it be cone in or magnet in. and the sub as to be the right kind for this to work and sound properly.

I agree with horsemanwill get rid of the speakers in the dash and put some speakers in the doors if you don't mind cutting into the door panel. I've had both an 87 cutlass and a 86 monte carlo SS and in my cutlass I put 6.5's in the door and they were perfect, but I could'nt bring myself to cut into the door panels on my SS and was stuck with the dash speakers and some 6x9's and I was not happy with that at all. Also with that trunk space you have so many choices. I started off with four 10", then four 12" and finally 2 15" so you can do what ever you want.
