Clarion SQ Question - Older unit

I have an older Clarion Mini Disc (RMX855Dz) and DSP (DPH7500z) along with one of their CD Changers. Speakers are MB Quart PSD216s (6.5" seperates) in all 4 corners, 2 12inch Alpine Type Rs in a sealed enclosure .85^3 each, PPI PCX-480 for Mids and hi's, and a sounstream 1000s for subz.

The system is in my 96 Impala SS, this car I use mostly just for show, 18k miles on it and it is mint, so I barely drive it, but when I do I like good sounds, and a nice car. I am putting it back on the road and was considering upgrading the HU. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/682884

What are your opinions on the HU and DSP above, and just on SQ not features since the newer radios can obviously have MP3 etc. I dont mind the Mini and CD audio since I have lots of music in these formats. I am considering purchasing an Alpine 9887, without the external DSP (at least in the begining.)

How much better would an Alpine or any other suggestions less than $400 sound compared to the Clarion I have?

don't think you'll notice that much of a difference, given the components you'll be hooking the deck up to.

whichever one suits your tastes is the one you should go with. about half the SQ you're going to get out of your system comes from installation and materials used for it.

the other half starts at the brain (HU) and trickles down to the speakers. a good balance of both gets you a really nice sounding stereo.
