Choosing a sub

Alright so I have a friend who is looking for a new sub. He has a good bit of trunk space so a 12 or 15 would be a good size. He has a 2 ohm stable 1200 RMS amp. He has a budget of around $280. He wants something that really gets after the lows and was looking as a Kicker L7. I told him that probably wasn't the best option. He doesn't have component speakers though so he can't have something that only hits lows or else he will miss a portion of the frequency range. So what are some good suggestions?

For my taste, I'd use something like Image Dynamics IDQ12 or Infinity Kappa, running the subwoofer at 4ohms, ported box if necessary. However, if the goal is to extract the most bass you can, you could try running at 2ohms something like Sundown SA-12 in a custom built ported box or perhaps the new 1000watt Alpine Type-R in a sealed box, with gains set by DMM so you don't overdrive the subwoofer or amplifier.
