im just a little worried that ill shell out 100 bucks or whatever to get a nice ported box built, only to have it sound the same. Regardless, ill get a new box before I reinstall it, but im still worried about that. It still sounded extremely loud, just not 1000 watts loud. For most normal people, it would probably be more than loud enough.

yes..but its an xxx. xxx = LOUD

im 99.9% sure your ported box will be MUCH louder than your sealed. let it breathe

well even though this setup in my old car sounded really loud to me, i sat in my buddy's eclipse that is running 2 JL audio W1 v2's, running from a single 250 watt JL Audio amp, and his hit much harder than mine, in a sealed box. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif Meanwhile I'm running a 1200 watt rms amp, lol. Mine has wayy better sound quality, but there is no question that his hits harder than mine.

...please. for the sake of everyone who spends time on this forum..port your box, tune it to somewhere between 28-40 (depending on your tastes) and wang it. his jl's will sound like 6 1/2s

ha, im pretty excited to get this thing in a new box then if it will make that huge of a difference in loudness. But first of all, how in the world do i figure out what size and tune would suit me? I wanna say i like 65% SPL, 35% sound quality, meaning i want it to hit HARD, but i also want it to sound good doing it. But i don't want to sacrifice SPL just for competition level sound quality, because i don't need it like that, i just need it to sound good with most music, and not just be a bass tone replicator basically.

And i don't have a box yet, i was just gonna pay someone on here to build it for me. What do you suggest for port/tune? I like it nice and loud, but i need it to retain some sound quality. But on the flipside, im not a sound quality freak either, i bought a sub to pound my chest in, not to make a perfectly harmonic system.

It definitely won't sound the same in a ported box, should be much louder. Don't listen to those who say that the XXX wasn't working to its potential in a sealed box, they are supposed to perform well in sealed boxes and it was doing its thing. You were satisfied with the output without giving up a shit ton of space, not a lot of people on this forum can say the same. Also, that prefab rule doesn't normally apply to small sealed boxes. Chances are if you put it in another "well-built" sealed box with about as much airspace, it would sound exactly the same to you.

ask around, look on re's site for what your sub performs best in.

ask around for tuning also. i like 37, just built my new box to 35..hated it..modded it back to 37. its just what your used to. its all about what "kind" of bass you like. personal preference.

i like really hard hitting, quit bass that hits right in my stomach. Not sloppy boomy bass. Also, how does tuning work, is it the lower the frequency, the boomier the bass or something?

no, this box is like 4 years old, its from my very first system. I went through several subs and they all went in this box. I had a JL Audio W3, RL-P, Infinity Perfect, and now the XXX, all in this box. i would have bought a bigger one but my trunk was non-existent. higher tuning..high wanging bass. that loud WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE that you always hear at competitions?

what would be right in the middle? I don't compete or anything, but i love listening to music in my car on long trips. Low bass seems cool too.

yea, well i know that now. I figured that out after I bought the sub, but didn't want to fiberglass my trunk so i just dealt with it. But suprisingly, it is still very very very loud. I can't imagine it even getting any louder than it was.

You have never heard loud. That JL system is WEAK....and I am a JL sackrider too.
