at least a VOM (volt-ohm-millammeter)....95% of troubleshooting/install work can be done with a three function meter.

the good ones do basic cap checking, diode check, etc, etc...my Greenlee DMM does more things that I'll figure out how to use.

Jack's right. Make sure that you know the tolerances on your meter too, before you start using it's reading in calculations.
