Cheap DD Replicas

I blew one of mine testing a 3000D on the pair. I had probably weakened it earlier testing 3000Ds on 1 sub at a time //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Anyhow... putting a 12-spoke and a flat-wind RE based re-cone on it to get them running for testing again. The spider landing is slightly too small to take the RE style spider so I could not use the stock basket.
Hey, could you post pics and let us know how the recone goes, I am getting one of the 12's from Parkave, I will be running it on a single Kx2500.1 at 2 ohms.

How do you fix that problem you were talking about earlier, the one about the spider or something making noise?

You would have to recone it. I don't know how you would take out the spider, flip it around, and put it all back together without destroying it in the process.

CJW is right, you can't fix the noisy spider without a total re-cone. You can keep the spider from coming loose from the basket with a bunch of epoxy -- I had to use a screwdriver and a hammer to get mine apart since I added all that epoxy.

I'll throw up some pics of the finished product. My RE re-cones did not quite fit on the original basket, the original has a lip around the outside to center the spider ring -- the RE spider would sit on the lip and not the landing. So I'm using a 12-spoke. Coil alignment looks accurate enough vertically... gap is pretty tight between the pole and coil, only 6 thin sheets of paper (RE XXX was 12 sheets for reference). I need to order some terminals before I can finish... I forgot that I didn't have any spares that were the solder-to type.

I see alotta little issues with these on good power, but how did they test with less power?

Let's say I picked up a single 12" and ran it off around 1200rms

Would it last? Would I need a recone? etc

Also, how are they SPL/SQ wise? In comparison to say DD as well as something like a 12" L7? Worth the money?

You will still need to epoxy the spider landing, but yah, it should take a 1200 watt RMS amp fine. May still have the spider "popping" issue as that is a design flaw.

Hey Jacob, that would be great if you could post yiour pics when your done //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
I just finished one. Will be making another the same way.

Specs as follows with RE 4-layer flat-wind coil D1 configuration and soft spiders:

RE (series) = 1.75 Ohms

Fs = 28.7 Hz

Qes = 0.423

Qts = 0.397

Qms = 6.461

Le (1 khz) = 1.08 mH

VAS = 39.25 L

BL = 12.22 N/A

Cms = 153.59 uM/N

Mms = 199.8 grams

Should sound quite good. The BL^2 / Re is 85 which is right around where many good sounding woofers sit (not over motored).

If you want to continue using it as an SPL sub I highly suggest an 8-layer flatwind... but a 4-layer, as you see, turns it into a very daily friendly type sub. I *did* break it in before measuring these specs as well, FYI.

And yes... that corner of the office IS very messy.

Looks sweet, how does it sound? I've also noticed that you seem to be obsessed with RE recones, any particular reason? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Because David is a cool dude //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I haven't listened to it yet, I need somewhere to put it *laughs* My car is broken down at the moment.

That sucks. How does RE compare to Fi for recones? Also, if I ever needed a recone for my BMs where would I have to go? I'm just wondering since they have 2.5" coils instead of the standard 3" ones obviously.

Good luck on the BM //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It has a 60mm coil so it's hard to find as standard is around 63.5mm ... I'm looking for a source.

RE does a good job on re-cones for me, so has FI -- both do a good job.

Hmm, you think Nick knows a place that would recone them? Or does he have recones?

He can get re-cones, sure, as far as I know he hasn't needed any yet -- just replaced em' for people if necessary.
Ah, well if he can get recones no worries then, I just don't want to have to replace these things if one were to go south.
