As I shop on ebay I know not to buy brands like

PYLE or Legacy but what other ones have you guys seen.

And are there any that are OK for certain things?

Like Pyle is ok for LCD screens or something.

And whats the funniest knock off you've seen?

Two names I try to warn people of are Sony and Jensen. Both are overpriced, unreliable brands and are sold at many stores. I apologize to anyone who has a sony product and thinks they got their monies worth.

I've never heard of Sony- are they new to the United States?

Pyle is ok for screens, as long as it has a good picture. Will you want to show it off to your friends? No. If you have the money it is always better to buy quality components, but if you don't you can still find some decent stuff from off-brands. 15 to 20 years ago all we had were off-brands and people did just fine.

Jensen I agree with, but Sony I don't. I have used sony HU's ever since I got into car audio, the exception being the Pioneer I have currently, and I have never ran into any problems. I know there are many people out there that hate sony, and thats cool, I'm just saying its not all junk like people think. Although, everything I've used has been Mobile ES except for my xav-7w.

The older sony stuff was good. The newer stuff is horrible in my honest opinion. You hear more stories of people who had to get rid of their products because of cheap quality (skipping head units, rattling speakers.. etc) than people who are happy with their quality. Some love their looks and that's fine if that's all you want. But, for the money.. there is much better out there.

I am currently running a sony headunit till i can decide on what to buy next. use it and love it. works great for me. careful on what you bad mouth from word of mouth.

I'm not badmouthing it, just saying it isn't worth the money. It's an unreliable brand. Most reputable car audio delearships won't even stock it due to their poor quality control.

How can you come on here and say something like that? Are you a professional Sony reviewer? Have you used every single **** Sony HU made? What exactly makes it not worth the money? I'm not a Sony fan, but I have to give the company a little respect for becoming one of the largest electronics manufacturers of all time. Apparently they have done something right.

Just because your opinion is that Sony is bad does not necessarily make them bad. This is like the Alpine vs. Panasonic thread in the HU section. Just because you don't like a company doesn't make them horrible. Your opinion is not worth any more than someone who does like them, in fact less because it's probably not based on any factual information.

I would lean toward saying that his opinion does matter however he should refrain from only talking about those units which he has personally used.

I have heard and listened to many sony head units. There older stuff was not bad. For the money of a Sony head unit you can buy a much more reliable and better sounding brand. That is a fact. When comparing Alpine to Panasonic I would say you cannot compare them because they are in different classes of car audio. But when comparing Sony to a similar priced Pioneer or even Panasonic you will almost always come up with a better sounding head unit and a more reliable brand.

Sony is a great electronics company, but they have divisions. Their car audio division is not that great. Many other sony products and divisions are excellent.
