soundstream's tx.440 has a better s/n ratio and some other features than the cerwin vega 400.4 yet the c/v has a higher retail price???

One line of CV was designed and made by Robert Zeff's (of Zapco fame) company.

I think it was that EXL line, but Im not positive.

It was and thats why I recommended that line. The Clarion APX and DPX lines were also Zeff designed.

I'm planning to install a EXL-400.4 in my sister's car next weekend. That eBay price is kind of high though because I spent less than $120 shipped for mine.

Yes, even though I doubt there is a manufacturer's warranty NOW because they blew those things out in 2008. I paid $119.95 shipped whereas others paid $85 plus shipping when they were being blown out.

The price you pay for a BNIB discontinued Zeff designed amp. Quality costs.

I agree, it is a great amp for the money even at the higher price. This was the amplifier that made me realize I was wasting my money by paying top dollar for *rare* old school amplifiers on eBay. Just because something is rare and commands top dollar due to a cult like following doesn't mean it is great!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Edit: I just tested mine. It started to clip at 186 watts per channel, bridged @ 4 ohms front and rear, then I blew the onboard 40 amp fuse. Whoops. I'll test 4 channel, 4 ohm output when it cools down and I find another fuse.

Edit2: At 8 ohms bridged, the EXL-400.4 produces 118 watts per channel just prior to clipping. The next notch on my volume knob puts it at 123 watts RMS with minor clipping.
