Car speaker help

I drive a 1990 Toyota Corrolla and my stereo system is an Aiwa CDC-X207. The system works fine when my car is on accessory, but as soon as I start the engine, there is no sound. At first I was thinking that it could be the Aiwa, since it is notorious for malfunctioning, but when I looked closer, I noticed the volume bars were still moving as if the system received audio, but the speakers weren't playing. Now I think that it's the speakers (Jensens) that might not be working correctly. Any tips/help?
