I'll start by adding, and asking this:

Why is it bad to use the bass boost on an amp? What exacly does it do bad that people say its best to not use it? I belive in the right setup, and used properly, it performs well.

I would tend to agree. I used it in my last set up and it was great. With the system I have now I don't use it or really need it. I think people are afraid of distortion, and possibly clipping.

it boosts a certain frequency, usually like 45-50hz anyways, and if you set your gains properly the boosted signal will cause clipping.

well my amp is rated 420max @ 2ohms on my kicker cert, when i first got the amp, if i set the gains to high it would go into protect mode and stay there until i lowered the gain, then go back to power mode. now it doesnt go into protect mode. im running a mach5 maw @ 2ohms, 350rms for the sub. doesnt seem to be clipping at all.. how can i tell if its clipping? the bass boost on my amp works moderatly well for the output im using

Get yourself a Osiliscope for about 120-170 bucks. Check it with that. Just because you don't think your clipping dosen't mean your not. Other than that for a easy test you can change your sub over to series to give it less power and get yourself a test disc with a 50-60hz tone and turn down your gain some and turn your deck up you will notice when the deck starts clipping from a tonal change back it down one of two and go at the amp and adjust it just below you here it change tone. You can also use a 3db or 6db clipped disc don't remember who has some mp3s of them on here some one has to if you ask. That isn't a for sure way the O scope is better but is the cheaper way to go about it.

a good meter is an installers best friend, Autostrippers are god as well as tone genorators. Know what your doing before you start, and the obvious one you get what u pay for.

i have a scope and using bass boost wont cause clipping if your gain is set low enough
