Can't find an alternator rewind

I'm a little confused. I've heard a lot of people talk about getting an alt rewound to increase it's amperage output. Well I went to my local shop, and they said that there is no such thing as a rewind, but I can get a 140 amp alt for $125. I can go up to a 200amp alt, but it's around $215. I dont understand.. I wanted a rewind to boost it up. Any ideas? Would it even be possible for me to do it by myself?!? (I'm a avid do-it-yourselfer)

Thanks for the replies. I'm seeing a lot of stuff online about rewinding alternators for use on windmills and turbines and stuff.. but not sure about that.

The prices, I thought, WERE very good. And that was the INSTALLED price... but its either 140 or 200.. no inbetween. I was thinking 160-70 would be ideal. I have a 100amp right now, but I'm about to install 2 amps. One will be the BA 1600M1 for the subs, and havn't decided on the other for the highs yet.

Do you think 140 would be effecient enough, or should I go all out and get the 200?

BTW... the alts are new, as far as I know. The 200 comes with new brackets and belts and stuff, which is why it's so much more.

You can do a search on google for 'high output alternators'
yeah, i saw those, but neither carry BMW alts. Plus i can't find a store locally that will rewind alts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif . Would one of those places let me ship them an alt to rewind or no?
