can u control alpine through ipod instead of the unit?

iv had my cda-9885 for over a year but just got an ipod and im not feeling the control through the hu..its hard to read and the artist scroll take forever..is their anyway i can control directly through the ipod while still using the cable for the hu and not a transmitter?
