Can I jump start my battery?

In the cold months it's good to get in the practice of checking your battery's resting voltage after the vehicle has been off for a while. A charger with a 2 amp setting, that automatically stops charging so it won't boil the battery, is good to have. This lower current setting is ideal because charging a battery generates heat, and a very cold battery needs a gradual, slower charge. Checking the voltage every week or two and maintaining a healthy charge level can possibly prevent you from having a no start situation at the worst time(isn't it always at the worst time?). Extreme cold and heat is hard on charging systems.

Important note: There's much more to car batteries than what a quick voltage check will tell you. Consult your mechanic or a battery specialty store for a check-up. Here's an article that has more information: Battery Basics: A Layman's Guide to Batteries

The alternator is not there to charge a dead battery, so after a jump start you need to connect a charger.

I always like to make sure that the stereo face is detached (if possible) before jumping vehicles also disconnecting the main power wire feeding your amp isnt a bad idea either. I've just seen too many times people having to jump their own or someone else's car and their radio or amp doesnt work anymore. low voltage increases amperage and can kill electronics and can be caused by your battery being low or the car you are jumping being low.
