Can Anyone Spot Errors In This Install?

what's the problem with grounding an amplifier with a smaller guage than the power wire? (sorry i'm a newb and was actually told by a few people there was no problem with this)
You need to pass just as much curent through the power wire as through the ground. If your amp is pulling a lot of power, the ground is working just like the power. I hope this simple analogy makes sense...it's not technical.

Tell those idiots that told you that to look at the back of an aftermarket cd player and ask them why the ground is clearly larger than all other wires coming out of the head unit.

I noticed he was using the red wire as the ground and the darker purplish for power.

As long as the ground wire is of adequate size for the application, there is no reason that it should be of the same size or larger than the + wire. None. Could just mean that the power wire is too big. Wire color is merely a convention and is not a hard and fast rule. I use two colors generally used as gound in my install. As long as the guy doing the wiring doesn't get them mixed up, it doesn't matter. I just hope he removes the allen wrench before he tries to power it all up...
