Can an amp be blown by 21 volts?

So my car's alternator seems to be broken and it puts out around 17 volts when the engine is shut down, and around 21v when it's on. My question is, would it be enough to blow a car amp? Thanks in advance.

you alternator is not putting out anything when shut down.

either you have a bad battery, a crappy voltmeter, or 2 batteries hooked up wrong

I think your multimeter is having issues.

21 volts would blow everything in the car.

Replace batteries on meter, low batteries can cause some weird readings.

Yeah your Alt puts out zero voltage with the engine off.

yeah it batts in volt meter mine showed 19v 1 time last yr..

My bad about the part with the engine off. The battery puts out 17 volts,not the alternator. I'll try using another multimeter, just as you suggested.

The voltmeter was faulty. Changed the battery and everything is fine now. Thanks for the help. Feel so dumb right now...

Hell $hitt happens to all of us.I was raging and upset the other day when I couldnt find my keys..Ended up finding them hooked to my belt loop
