they would all be reading the same, and they would generally be reading the same as the computers powersupply 5 volt rail.

yes you can do this BUT you may or may not need additional power source to power the drive. USB ports are 500mA and a lot of the drives out there are 550mA. which doesn't make sense to me at all. you make an external usb hard drive to be powered off of say your laptop USB and guess what, it doesn't supply enough power. i'm not saying this is the case for all. i've spent some time looking for this myself and if you read reviews on say Newegg, you see people even having issues with power when using laptops and desktops. i have a 40gig Soyo Onyx USB drive, the drive is actually the same Toshiba drive found in iPods, but it needs 550mA and my Kenwood KDC X591 only supplies 500mA. it lights up, but it won't read it. *edit* this turned out not to be the factor, drive is now spinning wonderfully without additional power source. reformat to FAT32 solved the problem

so in short, either search untill you find a drive that will work without extra power source, or get whatever you want and then get something like this Addonics Technologies. good luck and if you find drives that work, please report back.

okay update, i have fixed my problem. my Soyo SlimEx Onyx 40GB is working fine now. it needed to be re-formatted to FAT32 file system.

I got one for ya, how much space can the avrage HU read, heck some OSs cant read above, what like 500gig, Some phones cant read above 1gb, wonder what it is for the average HU.
