Can a starter essentially "freeze"??

try jumping the starter at the soliniod. Use a screwdriver to short the 2 wires on it, the black and the red. If it clicks/turns over, then its somewhere in the wires or ignition switch. Also make sure it is in Park. or try starting it in nutrual..

Are all the connections clean and rust free? One of my older cars had some dirty *** connections that when coupled with moisture and ice, made a circuit impossible. It would do the same thing you do. Lights, go to crank, nothing.

I completely forgot!!!! Like said above try and start it in nuetral. If it starts, then the nuetral safety switch is bad.

i tried starting in neutral and got nothing. And i highly, highly doubt its a wiring issue. This is a garage kept 2006 escape, its in better condition under the hood than any of my vehicles.

Tap the starter (not too hard to do damage) with a hammer. The bendix and/or flywheel may have a bad spot, causing them to 'stick' together. Its a common problem. You can also loosen the starter bols and wiggle it, then try bumping the ignition. The cold may just be a coincidence. Ive never heard of cold weather 'freezing' a starter in place.

I used to have to do this as well. Worth a shot.

if she grinds her starter a lot it could be that the bendex is worn
