Camaro 5th Gen Wiring

Hi All,

My daughter bought a '15 Camaro, very base model, very base radio (non-BA). I bought front-door (cheaper Infinity) components from Crutchfield. They sent connection adapters for the door woofers, but had a note that they don't have a connector for the tweeters. I figured it OK as they will tap off the woofer, through its included crossovers. If I hook just the woofer up, it works. If I try to connect the tweeter to either from the woofer, the tweeter doesn't play and the woofer starts to crackle/static when the volume goes up, even moderately.

The factory tweeter has a cap with it to block lower freq. I can't seem to get them both to play at once. I can get the tweeter to play plugging in them alone.

From what I understand, the Boston Acoustic system has a factory amp and requires 2 ohm speakers as the they are wired in series. I don't have BA so I shouldn't have the amp (IIRC). I've installed a Pioneer headunit using iDataLink CAM1 setup. I'm running speakers off the deck right now. Factory speakers work fine. Looking at a wiring diagram, it looks like the door is wired in a certain way. The diagram is with the amp. In another diagram, I saw that the non-amp systems have different color wiring. I have the tan/grey wires show below.

On to my questions:
  • If these speakers 4ohm and in series, that would be 8 ohms. Could that cause my woofer to crackle vs just playing softer?
  • Is it possible I have an amp (too lazy to look)? I shouldn't have on unless the doors show BA logo on grill.
  • If I do, in fact, have tan/grey wires in series, can I just cut and connect the two wires in the door before they split?
I've done plenty of installs. I know if we ever get an amp I'll need to run new wires anyway, but I have a nice T-harness no splicing hookup behind the radio. I don't want to run new wires.

Thanks!

It sounds like you're doing a great job troubleshooting your daughter's Camaro's audio system. Let's dive into your questions:

1. **Woofer and Tweeter Impedance**: If the speakers are 4 ohms each and you connect them in series, it would indeed create an 8-ohm load, which might cause issues if the amp (or head unit) is not designed to handle that impedance. However, if you're running off the head unit and it's capable of driving 4-ohm speakers, it shouldn't crackle unless there's a short, wiring issue, or a problem with the connections.

2. **Amp Presence**: If there's no Boston Acoustic logo on the grilles, it's unlikely that an external amplifier is present. Most base models of the Camaro do not have an external amp, but double-checking the audio options available on the vehicle would confirm this.

3. **Connection at the Door**: If you have tan/grey wires running to both the woofer and tweeter, it may be tempting to connect them directly. However, these speakers typically have crossovers built into the tweeter mounts or as separate components. Cutting and connecting wires might compromise the crossover's function, causing distortion or damage to the tweeter. Instead, it’s best to hook up the tweeter using the existing crossover setup.

### Additional Suggestions:

- **Check Connections**: Ensure that all connections are secure. Loose connections can lead to crackling sounds.
- **Speaker Wiring**: If using the existing factory wiring, validate that the connections are correct according to the wiring diagram. Incorrect wiring can cause issues.
- **Test the Head Unit Settings**: Ensure the head unit is set to the appropriate audio output settings for the speakers in use.
- **Consider Crossover Use**: Since you're experiencing issues with the woofer and tweeter together, consider using a separate, dedicated crossover if it’s not included.

Feel free to ask if you need further clarification on any point!
