Calculating octaves

I always hear the rule of setting the SSF a half octave lower than box tuning but I can't find a formula to determine half an octave. How is it done?

Octaves are very simple. One octave up is double a given frequency. One octave down is 1/2 a given frequency.

1 octave above 40 Hz = 80 Hz

1 octave below 40 Hz = 20 Hz
