Buy a box or build a box

I'm going to be buying my first setup in a month or two, and I'm planning on getting 1 Alpine 12" Type X. Someone recommended me to this site for my woofer box, but said it was going to cost me a pretty penny. From the looks of the videos and such, it looks like the boxes are really good, but coming from someone who has never dealt with this kind of thing, I really wouldn't know, so I wanted to get other people's opinions. Is it worth it to pay them to build be a box, or should I try and build my own. How difficult would it be to build one to the same quality standards that they are? Thanks in advance for the help.

IMO, those boxes on the site doesn't look so great. Their are so many more people on this site that make cleaner looking boxes than those. If you have the tools, make your own. If not, ask around on these forums to see if anybody local to you makes boxes.

X2 My first self made box looked cleaner then some of them boxes. If they look that bad on the pictures which look like they were taken by a phone camera imagine how they will look in person. as for the video of the 4 memphis mclass subs moving the roof. I have 2 memphis PR subs which are lower wattage subs and they do the exact same thing in my latest box which i built myself. If you have the tools I say build it yourself if not find someone locally from this forum to help you out. You will pay alot less and more than likely have a cleaner looking box.

or if you decide to have one built for you, i recommend Moe Lester on this forum. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Definitely build it yourself.
Not only will it be cheaper, but its a good learnign experience.
X5000. You will learn a lot and I highly recommend you learn from your mistakes instead of giving up and saying building a box is too hard. Regardless of what people will tell you, its pretty simple. I actually dont find it any harder to build a sealed box from a slot port box.

Also, never buy prefab boxes

1) Cheap and thin wood

2) Probably little to no effort put into it

3) The specs will not always match your subs

4) Most of them will have some air leaks

Alright...I did notice the boxes looked not so clean, but some of the videos I thought were pretty cool, especially the Monte Carlo one, but i've never really been around high end set ups so I wasn't sure if thatt was something normal or something from the quality of the box.

So, since the verdict seems overwhelmingly in favor of me building my own box, I guess I'll try that route and start doing some research. Thanks guys.

In reply to this post, many prefab enclosures are like this, but I challange anyone to find one of our preman enclosures (http://www.able-audio.com) with an air leak, or made of anything cheap or thin. All boxes are made from 3/4" MDF, with high grade adhesive, and sealed with caulking to prevent such air leaks. This is a misconception about a lot of premade boxes. Research is done to get the specs as close to as many subs as possible, I have heard many enclosures specific to vehicles and subs that dont sound as good as ours. Most one-timers simply do not know how to properly design an enclosure. It may be easy and less expensive to do it yourself, but without experience, you may just get better sound having it done.
