building a box!

Ok so this might be a dumb question but its pretty basic. how do i keep the MDF from splitting when i screw into it!

on the outside piece of wood i drilled a hole so the screw can just go in and out of the hole.

as soon as it started grabbing on the other piece behind it the wood split!

so no matter what the screws can just keep spinning no matter how long i try to screw them in for!

i want a good box that wont fall apart on me!

any suggestions?!

tutorials?! ANYTHING?! lol

thanks in advance!

first, make sure you are using 3/4 mdf.

also, make sure you aren't using super large screws, i wouldn't use anything larger than a 1 1/4 drywall screw...

also, it looks like you are predrilling, which can help, but make sure you are centered when screwing the wood...

Yea, predrill for sure and using drywall screws usually does the trick....or if you have clamps or a friend with clamps that would be the way to go //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And if it is splitting in an area or two try and put wood glue into the crack (possibly even spreading it open to do so) and then clamp the cracked area down and let it set for a good couple hours (or more if you can afford it) if you can spare it and it'll be nice and fixed up when you unclamp it (might have to sand down the excess wood glue afterwards too)

Are you only predrilling one piece or both pieces? You need to predrill into both pieces with a bit slightly smaller than the screw. As was said, stay a few inches away from the end. If you glue it good you don't need many screws anyway.

hey thanks a lot for the fast responds but ok sounds good!

im using 3/4 mdf!

but ya i think i was defiently drilling to close to the edge!

thanks again guys!

we will see how the box turns out over the next few days!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
