building a box tomorrow and could use some help

I will be building a box tomorrow for my 12" L7. I know very little about boxes, ports and tuning. I am trying to decide what to tune the port to... I will be building one of the ones found in this thread;

I listen to rap 99% of the time if not all the time and the sub will be getting less than 600 watts (amp puts out 600 @ 2 @ 14.4v)(if any of that matters). Also, should I go for 3 cubes? 2? Somewhere in between? Just looking for a few suggestions. Thanks!

What would be the difference between 3@35 or 2.95@34? Sub is 06S12L7...

Ok well, I got it built and I am rather disapointed in my work. This is my first attempt at building a box, and it turned out ok. The tuning is definately off, the port ended up being 3.75" wide instead of 3", I guess I was supposed to mount it to the side of the front board but I used the inside, which also brings it an extra .75" into the box. So I guess it's tuned to something I just don't know what lol. It sounds pretty good but I have ordered another L7 and will be building another box so I have a few questions for the next time around.

Does it matter where the speaker(s) is placed in relation to the port? When tuning, what is best for the lows? 32 or 35? I still do not really understand how to get what you want from tuning because I don't know what those numbers mean. From what I gather the lower numbers like 28-30 are for SQ, 31-35 SPL and 36+ is pretty much for competitions, but thats about all I know, and I'm not even sure that's right lol.

Most of those boxes in the "free box plans" thread only show one hole, I assume 2 could be used?
