I was just looking around for amps for my car and came acrossed the Trantula series from Soundstream (good?) I was looking at the 5 channel TRA880.5 now if i where to bridge channels 1-2 and 3-4 on one amp for my front speakers and then bridge channel 1-2 for my center speaker and just run the last two channels normal for my rears would this affect SQ on the three bridged channels???

Amps run 60 x 4 and 200 x 1 @ 4ohms normally

bridged they do 240 x 2 + 200 x 1 @ 4ohms

I want to run two of these but i don't want to degrade the quaility of the sound

someone please fill me in!!

Tim

Werd.

No degradation in SQ.

Double the distortion from the amp!
And that decreases SQ? Oh yes, we're dealing with SS gear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif That's what you get for your high damping factors and negative feedback...

Actually, at the same power level, distortion would be lower bridged ...
I've always heard it doubles... or maybe not doubles, but increases crossover distortion //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

But I guess I'll take your word for it, after all you are Jmac //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

edit: post # 1111!!!!!!!11

Sure, I made up my mind.

Running very high THD's from SS gear does sound sucky - that's because the amp is using gobs of NFB and has a very high damping factor, in part...also, the harmonics generated are harsh and unpleasant to the ear (odd/higher order).

SET's running in full Class A with no NFB routinely run THD's of 3-5%...do they sound bad? Umm, I think not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif All about the amp topology and the harmonics generated.

So you have my answer...

if its a relatively high damping factor amp, chances are it'll perform quite well bridged and still yield a good amount amount of damping as a good amp will still be in the inaudible range as far as distortion- typically distortion doubles, and damping cuts in half as you lower impedances- 4ohm bridged is equivalent give or take to the heat it draws at 2ohm stereo- of course you should carefully reset your gains to keep the noise floor low as possible- i think you'll be fine

Yeah...I really have no idea what I'm talking about...
How much does the XXX cost again? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

???? wow cunfused now!! I was planing on bridgeing for the power but gaining it down alot for head room. But doing this i should be fine with SQ right? Is damping factor better if its higher or lower?? IM A NOOB about amp specs!

Thanks all

Tim

yuh those amps are powerful to get rated power on my 320.4 van gogh my gain is less than 1/3 up (close estimate without going spastic in math) taurantulas are different but are still pretty strong. im glad i didnt switch amps like i was going to very happy with it.
