breaking in subs real or myth?

I think their is already thread about this. I cant remember what exactly was the "right" answer. But many dont do it, and some do it for quite sometime. I am one that doesnt, I just crank it up and keep pushing.

yea i tried looking for a thread on it, thought it would be on a sticky or something but no luck.

eh i might as well just keep it low for a day or 2 :p

Play it on normal power as long as you're not clipping. More of less a myth. If you're scared free air it on low power to loosen it up.
yea i wish i had a oscope for the clipping part lol, its for a 10'' w6 but there website says rms range is 200-600rms so not sure what rms to use lol

Breaking a sub in is a myth. Once you play it a day or so the suspension loosens up, which in turn the fs drops so it plays lower

its not a myth..it probably will not damage your subs if you "dont break them in"

but, breaking them in is real. Especially with stiff spiders and foam surrounds.. you gotta play them full tilt to get them fully relaxed to play to the xmaxxxxxx

Daily with low power not necessary burping with 10 to 20k I do lol ever seen a woofer explode into 100 pieces I have //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

If your enclosure is designed correcly, and you are not exceeding the recommended power of the sub, you will not harm it. I never associated breaking in a sub with preventing it from breaking. I have always understood it as breaking in a sub allows the soft parts to become looser allowing for more excursion.

Subs do have a break in period but you do not have to break them in before you can play full tilt.
This sums it up. Store put my Xs in, told me to play them a day at half volume to loosen them up. To make sure everything was installed properly the owner cranked my stuff before we pulled it out of the garage. If a sub fails in the first 48hrs and hasn't seen clipping, it was poorly manufactured or had faulty parts.

There is another very long thread about this were myself, holic, and a few others debate this very topic.

Bottom line is this. There is no "break in" per most companies rules for warranty. A speaker will not be damaged do to playing the speaker out of the box with in the mechanical and thermal limits.

The real break is as touched on already. If you play you speakers long enough they will be come "broken in" and will typically play lower. There can be other perks to this, but after that it typically becomes driver specific.
