Boxes for speakers?

I was just looking around sonicelectronix.com looking for speaker baffles when i noticed this thing called a bass boomer. It appeared to be for speaker sizes that are in the trunk so i figured it was to stop air messing up cone from subs. But, it is called a bass boomer and it is like a speaker box almost. would this help increase sound/bass from speakers because i was thinking that i could build some type of box around my speakers so there is less open air. would this work?
