if you have a sub that needs 5cubic feet and your box is 5cubes, could you put two of those subs in that box with the cones facing into the box. wouldn't they both be getting 5cubes?

No. They'd each be getting 2.5 cubes.

Whatever the cubes are of the box divided by the number of subs is what each sub will see in terms of airspace.
