box too big?

whats that? max excursion? my reason for asking is i have my type x in my mtx box. i think the box is too big, but it still hits good enough for me at the moment. the problem is i can smell the sub. still hits hard, and i know you guys are gonna say i have the gain up too far. it's not even halfway, and my HU doesn't get turned up past half either. never had a prob with the 9500 with the same amp with the gain all the way up. i'm confused as to why i can smell the sub.

You could use wood glue to glue the 2x4's on the bottom of the box. Put a brick or something on top of the 2x4's while the glue dries. This way you won't have to put any "nails" in the box. Don't use nails on a box...

EDIT This will change the tuning of a ported box.

meh, fck it i'll build one.

any suggestions? i want to get the most out of this sub on the low end. i'm about to get some polk mids.

i'm thinking sealed, but how big?

Having too large of a box will reduce the driver's mechanical power handling, not it's thermal power handling. Making the box smaller will not reduce the stink coming from the driver. If the thermal limits are being exceeded, then you simply need to reduce the amount of power going to the sub.

if this is so, then the type x sucks at handling power. i had my 9512 in on the same amp gain to the max and never had problems. this is very conservative gain setting IMO.

Build a small sealed enclosure according to Alpine's recommendation in the user manual. try it out. If you don't like it sealed, then build the recommended ported enclosure. And you might want to set your gains according to the Gain Setting Tutorial here or the one in my sig.

What amp are you running to it and what are the specs?

X's run there RMS no problem (1000) as I have 2 12's and my roomate has 2 10's.
