Box question, more or less?

Regarding cubic ft. on ported boxes, is it better to have more cubic ft. than the recommended area space or less area space? I have two choices for a box, one with 1.6 cubic ft and one with 3.0 cubic ft. The recommended cubic ft. for the sub is 2.0 ft. Which ported box would the sub sound better in? Need help, thanks!

The 1.6 will definetly sound better. When you get into boxes bigger than recommended, the woofer starts to act like its in a free air environment which sounds awful and can damage the sub.

It's an RE HC 12"....everyone here says it needs to be in a ported box so that's what i'm gonna put it in.
