Box experts...

I'm not expensive, he's just cheap. Wants a "custom" box for $50 over the cost of supplies, not hardly worth my time...
Not hardly??? Not EVEN.

I built a computer a few weeks ago for a 'friend'... she gave me a budget and I did all the research, ordered the parts on my own credit card, shipped 'em to myself, put it all together, installed the OS, tested it, packed it back up and gave her the receipts. Even used some parts I had set back for my own backup machine, since they had cost me less than the stuff she could have gotten at the time... she paid me exactly what was in it, not a thin dime for all the time and labor.

Oh well... that's what 'friends' are for, right? lol

That’s weak, in your defense, think about what it costs for general labor. A mechanic is like 60/hr? Takes more than an hour to build a box. Then specialization is a completely different story…

If people charged by the hour to build a box, labor would be $240 minimum. It just isn't a plausible way to do business. You charge what you think is worth the effort and time. It isn't always going to equal the going hourly rate.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with asking for more money. "Expensive" is subjective. Some people always go the cheaper route, thats all.

or what the customer wants to pay, so they go to someone else;)

Yeah I agree with that, but it was just a quick way to compare at some prices. Honestly how I have always seen woodworking (no matter what type) it's pretty much worth materials + what ever the person thinks their time spent was worth.

I’m not knocking anyone for going a cheaper route, hell who wouldn’t look for more options?

And I have no issue with him going somewhere else either if he just wants the cheapest he can find. I wouldn't build ANY box for $30, just not worth my time and wear & tear on tools.

I guess I just don't understand "kids" who have $400-500 worth of subs and they expect a nice "custom" box for $75-150. I've gotten several of these guys PM'ing me about boxes lately, just gets old after awhile.

The posts on here about "build a box for $20 in 1 hour" don't seem to help.

I make $30-40 an hour reffing ice hockey as my part-time job, so I really don't do this to make $$$, but I do expect a little something for my effort and try to provide the best product possible for a reasonable cost. Especially if someone isn't capable of building one themselves. I've offered to teach guys as I do the build, etc... so they can do it themselves next time.
