Box depth (height) and port clearance.

How shallow can a box be before you start losing output? I was thinking about a really shallow box and inverting my sub to save trunk space. I was thinking like 4" tall with a 2510 inverted? Too shallow?

And is there a general rule for distance that a port needs to be from a wall? Seems like I read somewhere that it need to be at least a diameter's distance from any wall. Is that about right? Or is that on the inside of the box?
