Is it just a wall...? as if a port wall, but then not? what is the purpose of this?

I seen on another forum they do it for less air turbulence in the box because of the uneven surfaces, and it reduces something that happens with the cone also because of the uneven surfaces of the ports in the box. Not quite sure though, just what I had read. Correct me if I'm wrong Mobeious.

And btw, in the future I want a box kind of like that built, I live in Clearwater so shipping wouldn't be too bad.
