Boss BV9557 Installation help

Ok.. yeah so this is a first time installation for me. I own a 1998 Ford Explorer xlt and i'm trying to install a boss bv9557 double din touch screen dvd/cd player. it fits well, size/dimensions etc arent the issue. I'm not so sure about the wiring. i was told by someone to get a kit for this and from my understanding of what was explained (which i was unable to take in 60% of which in a single dose) is that all the kit does is give you a two headed adapter piece meant to allow sophisticated types of cd/dvd/touchscreen head units and normal cd players.

did I misconstrue this?

or am i able to go ahead and remove the old head pieces on the suvs wires and match all the wires using the wiring diagrams for the vehicle and the boss bv9557?

If someone could please provide some insight on this for me?

the kit is a Wiring harness specifically made for aftermarket headunits to fit your vehicles specific wiring harness. So go to crutchfield.com type in your vehicle info and find the wiring harness you need. If you don't, prepare for A$$ pain.
