Heres my very short story.

I started taking the rust outa my truck (89 S-10 Ext Cab 4x4) and gave it up due to it being a lost cause and money pit for body work. I also fixed my truck when an old woman ran into me and screwed up the bumper, fender, filler panel, headlight assembly.

For taking out rust, grind out as much as you can, or just cut out the rust infected panel and replace it with a patch pannel, put filler in the seams, prime and paint. For a entirely new paintjob, you can sand some on the old/current paint in order to get the primer to stick, or you can sand it down to bare metal if you would prefer. I know that white is an extremely hard color to paint due to not being able to see where the hell youve been, how much is on there and so forth. I painted my fender and filler pannel for my truck when I replaced it. The trick with painting is to get it thinned the right amount. Body work is alot of work and time consuming in order to get it right, if you have waves in your metal, it sure as hell is going to show up in the paint.

My advice would be go to http://www.amazon.com and pick up a few books on body work before you start anything.

My .02$ and limited knowledge
