Blood Pressure Help Anyone?

So, I figured there may be someone with a similar experience or a registered nurse or something on the board... anyway:

less than 4 weeks ago I had 170/110 blood pressure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif:eek://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif:eek:

I managed to lower it by a very strict diet and slight exercise to 140/100 as of today and it's been 26 days. I went to my doctor today and he tried to prescribe me a blood pressure med. My question follows:

I'm now exercising every day and maintaining a very strict diet and I'm really making a lifestyle change. I dropped 24 pounds in 4 weeks and yeah I'm pretty overweight (5'7 and 285). Do I really need to be on meds? I hear some people who take BP meds have to stay on them for life because your body gets used to them, and I never had blood pressure before. I gained like 140 pounds in 2 years, so I must'v'e had 170/110 for a long time.

So, do you think I can reduce it to 120/30 over 80 soon enough that I don't need meds? I'm nervous and I heard doctor's hand these pills out like candy!

Thanks!

if you trust yourself enough to monitor your own blood pressure daily, then that is an option, but precentages say that alot of people won't. doctors hand it out to cover their as$.

I'm 22. I need to buy a monitor. I'm getting serious about my health.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

you have blood pressure that high at 22? do you smoke? i've smoked for 7 years, i'm 33, and never have consistent blood pressure that high.

Nah dude I gained 130 pounds in 2 years eating pizza, fat sandwiches, candy, all greasy *** foods. That's why it was so high. But in 4 weeks i dropped it 30/10 i thought that was good =/

You need to be on medication.

Yes, doctors hand them out like candy because people have high frigging blood pressure.

It's your choice, no one's going to make you do it, but if you want to have a stroke, or a heart attack, or end up with congestive heart failure, then don't bother.

Why would yo go to the doctor for this, anyways?

you need to take this $hit VERY seriously. Im sure you already know this.

Here is the thing,, with your weight and pushing numbers like that, you are at a VERY HIGH RISK for stroke right now. im sure you understand the potential consequences of what a stroke could mean for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even with a massive change in diet and excercise, your weight is the issue here. AND.. you need to be very careful about starting an aggressive excercise program. Although a good cardio programme is the best way to bring down your numbers, for those that are very overweight,, it could raise your risk factor.

You havent mentioned what your resting heart rate with your BP numbers is......

I just turned 31. I had a small heart attack last year while i was working in Nairobi. At the time i was 5'8 and 150 pounds ( a totally normal BMI). I was extremely active every day as part of my work. For some time i had been pushing numbers like you are (your bottom number is of GREAT concern) Sitting at 110 for some people is reason to go to the emergency room.

The reason a doctor might be trying to give you BP meds is because of your immediate risk factor. Even if you start lifestyle changes NOW, you might not be able to get those numbers down and need a little help until your BMI is much lower. Contrary to popular belief, you can start that kind of medicine and stop it later.

Have you had a proper cardio workup sich as ultrasound, ekg etc???

Lastly, I am not a doctor. I have master degrees in health related fields and experience with the subject.

This is a car audio forum and this is a VERY SERIOUS situation you are in. This is not the appropriate place to be seeking advice.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I went for a checkup 4 weeks ago and this was my follow up visit. I am taking it seriously, I'm just very busy and wanted other opinions. One of my friends is a RN and she said I should be fine but if it doesn't lower in a month go on meds. So I don't know what to do... Ugh I just never trusted meds

As for the EKG yeah i had one and obviously it was bad cause I had 170/110 at the time!! He told me to go on meds at that time and I chose not to and lowered my bp without them. But maybe I'm being stupid.

Post your tits whore! and stay on this meds until you get your shit under control, when you get down to a decent BMI range consult with your doctor again and have your test redone.

Like I said... why do you bother going to the doctor anyways? You obviously don't want to take his advice, so... why waste his time and your money or your insurance company's money or society's money or whomever is paying for this...
