i went to do it today and i got the grounds done fine, but the alt pos. is already fused, it runs off the batt. to the fusebox under the hood and fused @ 10a my question is can i jusr run a new fused wire from the alt to the battery and leave the old? or do i need to run the new wire into the fuse box and out. also will the 10a fuse be more likely to blow with the bigger wire?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

ok so i just leave the factory wires as is and run the 1/0 fused from alt. to battery? i figured i'd need a bigger fuse than a 10a. but thats whatt its fused with from the factory. my set up is in sig.

10 amps going from the battery to the alternator?

I don't think that is possible....

Anyway, heres what mine looks like:

And in this pic, is where I tied in the original harness in...I bolted a ring terminal to it, and cut the insulation off the 0 guage without cutting the wire, crimped the ring terminal on and clamped it...then taped it up.

The harness there supplied a lot of the power wires, if not all of them, in the engine bay/car...and a wire coming for the alternator was fused with a 100 amp fuse.

hope that helps.

^looks nice

i guess my main Q is can i bypass the fuse box and just fuse my own piece of 1/0 and leave the factory wiring, or do i have to follow the old wire through the fusebox? im gonna do this in the morning so if anyone has a solid answer LMK please.

Most OEMs have the alternator wire going to the starter relay and passing through a fuse. The starter relay is connected to battery positive. So, if you were to run a wire from the alternator to battery positive you are effectively doing the same thing that the manufacturer did. Sooo, yes. But, the main reason that the manufacturer uses the starter relay as opposed to battery positive is because the battery posts have a tendency to delelop acid and basic substances on the posts

and what not and that would pose a connectivity problem with the battery-alternator. If you are using quality parts and materials and you keep the battery posts clean you should not have a problem.

****, if I ever need an new alternator, I will definitely pay you to wire it up! That's nice and clean! Great JOB!

this is a question about the alternator to battery.

if you leave the stock wiring alone and just ADD on, then you just run a simple run of 0/1 guage from the alt. to batt. with a proper sized fuse for the wire around 12" from the batt. positive, correct???

i know some people dont run a fuse at all. but im asking in case you decided to

As said above, the proper size depnds on your wire. That fuse is to protect the wire from receiving too much current, overheating and starting a fire. Therefore, the proper method is to size the wire for your current capacity needs (how much current will pass through the wire) and THEN size the fuse apropriately for the wire size.

If you have a 200 amp alt, Id use wire that's big enough for.... more than 200 amps. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Then simply isize the fuse somewhere between that 200 and the max of the wire (should be higher). Im not sure a 200amp fuse would blow in that example, but you get the point.
