big 3 on a 96 suburban

i am going to do the big 3 and the one that goes from the alternator to the battery doesn't have a fuse so should i put one in or just run 0/1 gauge. Also i have read that some people say to leave the oem wiring do i have to? i would like to just run all new 0/1 gauge i think it would look cleaner. I know they say if you leave it it will be more wire but i think that the 0/1 gauge will be overkill anyways.
