big 3 fuse location

I've read some previous posts and when doing the big 3 most of them said to fuse between the alternator + to the battery +, but do it as close to the BATTERY + as possible.

I am not saying that it is wrong in any way, i am just wondering why. If the alternator is constantly producing current then why fuse closer to the battery rather than the alternator.

I also know that the battery holds a constant charge, i am just confused about the whole thing... If anyone could explain and set it straight that would be super spiffy.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

You're correct you do not have to, but you are putting your car in danger of catching on fire... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif Ask your self this, why does the car come with everything fused from the battery in the first place?

 
i'm just wondering if i wanted to do it, should the fuse be closer to the alt, the battery, or both(meaning 2 fuses)???

 
the reason you'd fuse it closer to the battery is because if that wire contacts ground the alt will try to dump what ever its max current output is at the rpm it's running at. For a stock alt, that's what -- 100A? 130 at the highest?

The battery will try to dump several hundred amps.

Which short would you rather protect?
