Best way to ensure quality on an ipod

Ok so most of my music is in MP3s. I have such a large amount it would be irrational to buy that many CDs and at this point I haven't bought a CD in I don't even know how long. But back to my point, I realize that 320 kbps is what one should aim for to get the best quality off of an iPod, but my question is am I missing out on something here to utilize the most quality possible off an iPod? I try to get most of my music in 320 kbps now but some of it still sounds so-so on my sound system and I was just wondering if somehow itunes could be messing with the encoding or something. Are there any programs you guys use to optimize sound quality of mp3s? Sorry if this threads been asked a million times but I couldn't find the answer I was looking for from searching.

320 kbps is fine. The problem is the way music is produced and engineered, along with a misunderstanding of what to expect from today's music. Compression is unavoidable, and I'm not talking about digital music files.

Unless you're doing a direct comparison of a purchased CD to a downloaded high quality copy of the same song you have no way to know if iTunes is causing the music to sound different.
