Best SQ Setup

I had a single 10 inch Kenwood torando sub, and it please me. I had a dual box, so I went with the dual 10 inch setup, and it isnt much if any better quality than my kenwood. Nothing special was done on the install. A friend of mine who has been into audio for years hooked the amp up, and when I got the subs I wired them in correctly. I am running it bridged off my amp at a 4 ohm load. If the ID or IDQ subs arent going to improve my system, I will not waste the time and money. Any ideas what I could do to my setup to improve SQ? I have messed with gain and other settings, and I have a bass control knob on my amp. IDK, do you think it is just because I am running them at a very low volume? I am not big into the bass, just wanted a little mixed in. These are the subs I have

It has been said many times, you need a new box. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

I have 4 guage power and ground wire and 16 gauge speaker wire. The amp is under my front passanger seat, subs in the rear (97 4runner). Do you think I need to switch to bigger speaker wire to help the sound? Thanks.

I would sell one of your subs, and add the money from that plus the 200 and get a box built. Honestly, you shouldn't need to spend over two hundred for a custom enclosure though. And bridge your amp.

My subs are only 250 watts rms each and my amp is a 360 Fosgate, pushing probably 400 watts rms. I thought about doing that, but I really dont like those numbers.

I have found a few members on this forum willing to build a custom box. In a sealed box, is it worth it to spend the extra money for a custom one, or will a prefab with the correct airspace work just as well? Looks like a custom box will be between 100 and 150, so that dont leave me much on subs with a 200 limit. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have no experience with woodworking. I really wouldnt know where to start with a box, especially carpeting it and getting the specs right. I have a local hardware store and a table saw (at home, I am in college). I dont have anything to cut out the hole for the sub. Yes I would like to build my own, but from what I hear everyone's first box isnt good, so why have to build several to get one right when I can have an experienced builder get me one right the first time. I cranked the JBL's up today, all I can say is WOW!! The SQ was definitely there. However, I really listen to low volume levels, and there is isnt. The JBL's are great subs, just not for my volume. I am thinking just the one 10 will be perfect. Thanks.

I'm confused by this.

Are you saying that you like the SQ of what you have, but feel that it's too loud?

If so, turn the gain down a little... It's free. No box to build, etc.

I have messed with all the settings, no luck. It is an odd situation. My normal volume level is about 17 on my radio. At this level, they sound like nothing special. I turned it up just messing around to about 25, and the bass came through much more clear and precise. Make sense now? Being clear at 25 doesnt help me because that isnt what I use on a daily basis. I am thinking one 10 will do the trick. Also, my gain stays set pretty much all the way down.

Make sense now?
No, but best of luck to you.

I don't know how you plan on getting more volume out of one sub than two.

You want to make your subs sound like they do at 25 when you are at 17 and think by getting rid of one you'll be able to accomplish this? Maybe I'm not reading right.

If you're wanting to achieve what I think you are, set your volume at 17 and turn up the gain on your sub amp until you reach the volume you like.

If I'm reading it all wrong, ignore me, but know that I'm just trying to help you save some money.

LOL, hard to explain. I dont know what it is, I just know what sounds good to my ears. I am not trying to get the same volume out of one 10. The 2 10's offer too much bass. It sounds better when turned up louder for some reason. The big reason I am wanting to switch is because the 2 10's have too much bass. I am running them with all the bass settings turned down, which is why I believe 1 10 will sound better cause I am using the power instead of wasting it by having it turned all the way down.
