i've always used a torch and rosin core solder when attaching tinsel leads but for my next recone i'm doing a direct connect to 8g wire. i did some tests and i figured a torch isn't the best tool for the job.

so....

what kind of soldering irons do ya'll use? what are the best ones? has anyone soldered tinsel leads directly to wire before? tips/hints?

Wen used to make quality irons as well. I'm not sure if they're still around or not. A soldering station is another option which allows you to dial in the heat as needed. Parts Express has quite a few choices. MCM Electronics is another good source. Shipping costs can hurt though. If you order enough stuff, shipping is free. I usually make a few phone calls to friends and "pool" an order to get free shipping.
