best head unit for around $500

The 9815 does everything the 7998 does and it has long file name recognition and will display two lines of MP3 / XM information. It also has 3 sets of XM presets.

I've installed 2 7998s, and my best friend has one. The way the 9815 presents the information is much more appealing to the eye. Scrolling all the time is irritating.

Actually, it scrolls, then stops on the title once it scrolled throught.
Can the 9815 display, song, album, file name, folder, etc all on one line at the same time? I think not.

Will you notice a difference between the 9815 and 7998? No, you won't.

It all comes down to aesthetics. And IMO, the 7998 is a thing of beauty //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

The 7998 and 9815 are both great decks. I was pondering on which one to buy buy I ended buying the 9815 simply because it didn't hide in itself, it's windows ready and it looks better. But both have great features and are great deck the 9815 is also cheaper.

My suggestion to you is to STAY AWAY FROM SONY, there decks are nice for beginers, but sony can't make car audio to save their lives, especially compared to all the other stuff out there for the same price.

Go with either the Eclipse decks mentioned of either the alpine 9815 or the 7998

Keep your distance from that Sony stuff when it comes to car audio. My friend as a Sony system in his car and I don't like to ride with him unless it is off. I've heard plenty of problems about Sony. Sony = looks, not sound

if you looking for Sq mine was one of the best i coul buy and it was under 400$. It does have alot of features but just not as many "COOL" features. I like the time alignment and 8v preouts personally.

I have looked at every head set out there and at every price..I am not SPL Competition winner but I have really been sold on the Pioneer stuff. ESPECIALLY that 9400 if it was in my budget. I don't know if you guys agree..but it seems like other manufacturers just add alot of buttons and then raise the price,,Alpine is very guilty of this I believe???

alpine's higher end decks are very good.
