I'm asking about unopened packages. I'm asking if they would open a brand new box just to check the serial number on a product. But then a lot of products have the serial number on the box

I will explain what happened so you can understand. I have a Kenwood HU brand new in box with no warranty. I dropped it and I'm pretty sure it's broken. Instead of opening it to see if its broken I just bought a new one from best buy and I plan on returning the one I dropped using the receipt from the new one.

If this is a game console or computer, the barcode is the serial number. Just keep that in mind.

I'm pretty sure the reciept doesn't have a serial number on it, so how would they know its not the same one?
