Old Yamahas Give Me Wood
Its been a while since i thought about car audio, much less posted about it.
The last post I made, I had just acquired a 1991 CRX si. Its a great little car: fun to drive, fast as hell and anytime a group of drunks needs a ride home from the bar, I simply say "sorry guys, I've only got a two-seater" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Instead of spending my hard-earned dollars on subwoofers and amplifiers, I've been using it to upgrade the engine, suspension and transmission. This ain't the CRX forums, so I wont bother with the details.
At any rate, I've finally decided its time to install a stereo that will out-loud my exhaust. This isn't for competition or show. I'm way too old, way too close to deaf and way too busy to mess with competition these days. If you remember me at all, you probably already know that I can design a pretty mean box, so that's not an issue either.
I want a single 18" woofer to get the low-lows that feel like you're getting slapped in the back of the head, but since I've been out of the game so long, I have no idea what my options are. I don't want a monster amplifier that's going to kill my alternator and require additional batteries and wires bigger around than my wang. I have a red top battery that's been relocated to the boot and an acura alternator that puts out about 80 amperes by my best guess. The good news is that the car only has one feature that isn't engine/headlight/turn singnal related and draws current (moon roof), so Im positive there's plenty of headroom with that alternator for something in the neighborhood of 400w class D.
The hatch area I have to work with is 22.5" from front to back, 35.5" from left to right and 16" depth. This is 10,353 cubic inches or just under 6 cubic feet before port/woofer/bracing displacement. There is a strut tower bar that will be directly above where the woofer sits, however, it rides above the boot cover, so it shouldn't be a huge issue.
The budget for this install is $300 for the woofer and $250 for the amplifier with very little wiggle room. I don't want used equipment or ebay shit with no warantee. I already have all the wires/fuses/etc. and the materials to make the box. Any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
REMEMBER THIS ISNT A COMPETITION OR SHOW INSTALL.
Happy Bumping!
