Be15 replacement options...

I bought an AP TXX-BE15 back on feb and I already have a 1" or so tear in the surround. The thing sounds **** good for the 130ish I spent, but I don't think I want another out of fear of it happening again. The surround is huge, and has a weird design that I'm certain lent to it's failing... Anyways, I bought it through vminnovations. When I called about a return/exchange/etc. they said that I could exchange it for a different item, or contact AP about having it fixed/replaced. I would rather exchange it, but the only other 15 it looks like they carry (that's worth having) is the opti 1533d. The only issue with that option, other than the added cost, is that it's a dual 1.2. After rise, how far off of 1 ohm do you think I'll be? It'll be ran off an apsm1500. Any helpful suggestions are appreciated....

....and by helpful I mean comments other than "that's what you get for buying AP, lol.

Impedence of any sub will be differnt at every frequency. Counting on "rise" like it just magically adds some known integer to the DCR of the woofer isn't how that works. It varies from one sub to the next, one installation to the next, and will be different at every frequency.

If you are playing music you should plan for your amp to "see" nominal impedence or possibly a hair lower at some point in its useable bandwidth.

That being said, the Opti looks promising, particularly if it's the one with the TI style frame, but IDK what the price difference is.

I only asked because so many people say "after rise", and I don't really want to run my amp below 1 ohm. All said and done, I think I would be be adding a tad under $150 or so to the exchange. Here's the sub:

to replace this one: as you can see... the surround is contoured to allow a drill/screwdriver access to the mouinting holes. It is around one of those contours that there is damage.

I'd say 98% of the people saying such things have no idea what they're talking about. There was a good thread here explaining how unles you only played one frequency "rise" was not something you should count on for normal music listening.

I definitely don't like the look of those surrounds. Cute, and in theory that edge of the surround shouldn't be live anyway, but still....ugly.

The bright side with those particular Lanzars is that you should be able to recone them cheap if you manage to break them. They look very solid and the few reviews of that era Opti subs have been encouraging.

I'm not worried about breaking the sub... I highly doubt under 1500 rms will hurt it. I was wondering if my amp will handle it wired parallel. Of course I would upgrade my power and ground that's going from the front to rear battery with 1/0, first.....

Keep in mind I've seen "4 ohm" coils from Kicker measure 3.3-3.4 ohm. I know a ton of companies have coils with DCR a good bit lower than their nominal rated impedence.... The point being that an amp rated as 1 ohm stable should be able to run .7 or .8 ohm pretty reliably unles it's a total POS.

it's a dual 1.2.... And although the apsm1500 has been working pretty darn well at 2 ohms, I fear for it's longevity under 1. I'm installing a +/- run of 1/0 and already have a big Yellowtop in the trunk, if it matters. Stock 115amp alt. Decent Interstate batt up front.

Got ahold of AP on the phone. They say that I have the old version, and that the new version that I would get as a replacement has a thicker surround. I would have to pay for shipping. Idk, if shipping is going to be a lot anyways, I might just go with the opti. Debating both options.... I was planning on dropping my ohm load with a new sub in the future regardless.

Running a pair of subs or just 1? .6 ohm is probably asking a lot from AP amp on music. I'd say at .8 nominal it would probably do it and rarely go into protect.

Just one. If I get the Opti, and I think I will, I guess I'll just wire it to 2.4. *****. I wish VMI had a better selection. I will probably just get another apsm and strap em.

Meh. Starting to have my doubts about the opti.... Apparently it lacks sound quality, has a high Fs, and cannot be reconed..... I REALLY hate to say it, but it's starting to look like I may just have to exchange the be15. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Why does VMI's selection have to be soooooo awful? Not a decent d2 sub on the site. Shoot, not really even a decent d4, for that matter. Idk, maybe someone can convince me that the 1533d isn't as bad as the search button here is saying it is....

FS isn't terrible. I'm more concerned about the high Q. Who sais they can't be reconed and why? I don't think there's many 3" coil gaps that you can't find something decent to fit.
Read a few posts about the no-go on a recone. Says it uses a "non-standard O.D" (Outer Diameter?). Not terribly concerned about that, though. I'm probably never going to give it anywhere near it's rated. However, I'm not well versed in thiele-small speak... What's the high Q mean? I just want "good enough" sq, as loud as I can get it.
