Bazooka Tube 8" or Solobaric SL8 for bass

Hi all, first post here. I've got a 06 Dodge Dakota Club Cab. Trying to add some bass. Current setup is Pioneer 4800 CD with 4 Infinity Reference 6010i's. They are powered by an Alpine F250 amp.

I also have an Alpine MRP-M450 sitting around. Not sure what I want to do with it. I want to keep the function of the rear seats. I have a space between them that is approx. 11" wide. I could go 16" tall and 16" deep for a box.

Thinking about the bazooka tubes (10" tube is too long so it would have to be an 8"). I'm also thinking about 8" subs. I like the SL8's, but would take suggestions from anyone on this. Considerations would be space available. My other questions would be, should I look at porting over sealed. I will probably only look to run 1 sub.

I'd like to have some deep bass, but want to avoid boomy-ness at all costs.

If you had the current set up and with the space above, what would you do. I would be willing to spend up to $200. Also, should I fire up, down, or to the side?

Thanks in advance...

well the bazooka's are nice i been using them over 10 years but they are boomy, so idk you might not like it.

i think cc sells them, go listen and see what you think.

also you could look into a 8" sub somthing like soundsplinter rl-i 8 $165 or crystal mobile sound cmp8 $100. and just build a box.

I'm definitely capable of building a box to fit a recommended internal volume. I've never built a ported box, but could probably handle it. I've never heard a single 8 in a ported box before. Would I get better performance and sound quality out of a ported box containing an 8", or would the bazooka tube be a better fit? Opinions???

Looks like I've got a recommendation for a rl-i 8 (thanks ruger-is it ruger as in rugby player?). How would 1 rl-i 8 compare to a solobaric 8. Ported or Sealed?

solobaric (square) 8's can get pretty loud and sound pretty decent at the same time. i havent heard the ss sub but if its anything like the rlp it should be a fine drive itself

only bummer about the kicker sub is that is IS square, so you're sort of stuck on that silly square hole....so later on down the road you look on a fourm like this one and see a 8" sub you'd like to try out, you'd have to make another box vs. just droppn it in your enclsoure.

On the other hand, you CAN buy a bazooka tube off of ebay for $20 (a blown one, sometimes even a good one) and use the enclsoure for another speaker entirely like the Soundsplinter 8", or some other driver.

for example :

Thats the older 8" bazooka model, the new ones are fairly close to this so at least you get a peek inside.

I got bored the other month and did this to it :

I use it for my computer's subwoofer off of a old 80's Pioneer 300 watt amp, and it rocks man. I also throw it in my vette on occasion.....sure its ugly but functional.

my point is this, buy the bazooka tube for your own cheapie pre made box and just put whatever sub you want in it.....add fiber fill to adjust tuning...wah-lah

Do you guys think that it's the sub that comes with the bazooka tube that sounds boomy, or do you think it's the tube itself making any sub sound boomy? I like the size of the tubes, but, it will be in the cab with me and I can't stand boomy!

the tube itself adds too the boominess
If you look closely at the design of bazooka tubes, its actually a transmission line enclosure....so what ya want to do is put some dampening material in the box.....

DID SNOOPDAN JUST SAY PUT FIBERFILL IN A PORTED BOX??!??!!?

yes, for this purpose it would be to raise the tuning fequency if needed by whatever sub you choose to put in there.

good luck!

you want low but not boomy... how about a sealed box? what type of music you listen to?

solo8 is a good 8 but i think it might be a little too SPLish for what you want if im understanding correctly

I will take a look at the solo 8 and I haven't ruled out a tube yet. In my old truck, I had 2 Kenwood Typhoon 10's (I know, not the best) in a sealed box. Each sub had .65 cu/ft. It hit hard enough to make my radar detector jump. In my new truck, I don't want to use the entire x-cab area for a 2 sub enclosure. So, going from 2 10's to 1 10 or a tube or an 8, I'm trying to keep that same low bass. I'm thinking a ported enclosure will be my best option, but I want to keep SQ in mind as well.

Here's what I'm trying first. I built a 1.0 cu/ft ported box this weekend for 1 of the Kenwood 10's that I have. The port is 2" pvc and is 2.8" long which should give me a box tuned to 45.5 hrtz. I will hopefully try it out tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it's sounds. For a backup, I built a .36 cu/ft sealed box for an 8" sub (to be determined-maybe a solo 8).

If neither of those work out, I'll probably try a tube. In case of a tube, how do the audobahn tubes compare to bazooka?

OK, what size ported enclosure for the 8" solo? Would 1 cu/ft work? Could I use a round port, or would I have to build a slot port?

Kicker makes it sound like a larger ported enclosure isn't recommened for their L78.

why not look at a DD 8inch?

my dad has one in his 1966 impala ss and its sounds real clean and good bass, its in a sealed box, i would imagine it would get quite a bit louder with it ported.

or how about a JL audio 8w6? (im pretty sure they make them in 8's, could be wrong)
