these are mainly used for guys that run their system with the car off, so your not usin the power off your main battery under the hood, which results in you being able to start your car after pounding with it off. im runnin 3 batts and i personally dont use one and i have seen NO problems, but I also never run my system with my car off. hope that helps and good luck
